Why it Feels so Heavy: Tech Overload, Burnout, and the Sensitive Nervous System

Being alive right now IS a lot. So many people are experiencing a deep, heavy tiredness and feeling dysregulated without knowing why. This is especially true if you are an energy-sensitive person or an empath. It is a level of exhaustion that they simply cannot shake. Some are recognizing this deep tiredness as empath burnout. Others experience it as needing more nervous system regulation. I suggest that the two go hand in hand.

In this article and video, I am going to name 3 reasons why so many people feel this deep tiredness and nervous system dysregulation. Because this is such a widespread issue, I am dedicating a whole series to breaking down what this condition is and how you can use energy hygiene tools fix it—without adding a whole lot of extra work to your load.

Why Do I Feel So Much? Identifying Energy Burnout Symptoms

One of the most common conversations I find myself having with clients, but also people I meet just moving about the world, is how hard it can be to exist right now. So many people are experiencing sheer exhaustion and a critical need for increased self-care time just to stay regulated and feel well. 

Three of the most common things that people are struggling with:

  • Feeling Overwhelmed: You find yourself unable to make simple decisions or remember small details because you are constantly picking up the heavy emotions of other people around you.
  • Feeling Dysregulated: You feel entirely unable to calm down. This frequently manifests as physical stomach issues like IBS, chronic anxiety, feeling deeply irritated by noise, and feeling inexplicably cranky – specifically after spending time on the computer.
  • Feeling Exhausted: You experience an intense wave of fatigue after using computers or other avenues of digital communication. You feel completely worn down after work or daily responsibilities in a way you never used to feel before, leaving you too tired to do anything but the bare minimum.

This is the case for so many people right now and is particularly true for the energy sensitive person, empaths, and those trying to find a balance between work, self, and home life. 

Has it always been like this? 

The truth is – no.

The question becomes – why do so many people feel pushed to their limits right now and most importantly – what can be done about it? 

Three Unexpected Sources of Modern Empath Burnout

We find ourselves in a rapidly changing world ripe with political upheaval and economic uncertainty—not to mention the unprecedented changes in technology that have revolutionized how people communicate, access information, and make a living. Regular life tasks like rearing a family, working, taking care of a living space, and getting educated now happen in a completely different landscape. It is an environment that is highly overwhelming and dysregulating if you do not intentionally take efforts to manage it. In addition to more common stress sources that we know such as taking care of a family, working a high-pressure job, or simply just being aware of politics right now can be exhausting. (Because trust me – it IS exhausting.) In the past few years, we have had new source of exhaustion slowly creeping into our everyday lives. I name those, here. 

When you look closely at this modern tech landscape, there are three hidden sources driving your exhaustion:

  1. Constant Availability (The Open Energetic Loop): Remember back when a person could write you an email and you did not feel the pressure to automatically respond to it? Or how about what it was like to go out without checking your phone regularly?

Being always accessible via text, email, and notifications means your energetic boundaries are never fully closed. You never fully get to leave work or whatever it is you are engaged with online. It also means that you feel pressure to quickly respond to queries or tasks sent in your direction during “off hours.” This leads to less time resting, recharging, and being present, which results in feeling depleted and overwhelmed.

Having the clear space to turn off the brain, to focus on health, family, and your own interests are important for your ability to feel grounded, stable, and connected. Silence and quiet moments are key for a sensitive system to come back to baseline. 

  • Hyper Information and Multi-tasking: Picture this: you’re at your desk doing a task with your computer – a different thought popping into your head, you grab your phone and begin to do a second task. As you are doing this, you are also getting notifications from your friend or work colleague and are in real-time dialogue with them as you do the other tasks. As you leave the day, you feel almost like your mind is numb.

    Picture two: you are home now, looking up something on the internet. All of a sudden, you have gone on a chatgpt deep dive or reels scrollathon that showed you 20 videos on a topic and you walk away feeling like you should do something but are too worn out and foggy to really even remember what you just watched.

Sound familiar?

Never have humans had access to so much information and so many pieces of technology that help share it. Every video you watch, every comment you read, and every task you do has its own energy stream. It is wonderful – but it also exposes us to so much information at one time that it can be dysregulating. Consuming so much and as quickly as is now possible, be it through ChatGPT or the 60 second video format with little rest to sift through information is a key source of contemporary overwhelm.

Empaths and energy sensitive people process information in layers and feelings – whether they realize it or not – you need ‘more’ time between tasks or separation between streams of information to process, sift, and come back to their regulated state. Not getting enough time leads to deep bone-feeling tired, almost wanting to disassociate, and not being able to retain information. It feels like you just ran a marathon when all you did was just use the internet and speak with other people (which most of us have to do in some capacity for work). 

3. Cellphone + Electronic Device Over-Exposure: You likely engage with computers and cellphones as a non-negotiable part of your daily life. Often, you might find yourself using both at the same time. The electromagnetic charge of cellphones, computers, and other devices like AirPods and smartwatches have an impact on the human energy system as well as how our bodies work. Here’s how:

All humans have a ‘charge’. Whether we are ‘charged’ properly or not has a huge impact on their state of being. As we go about our days, we go through cellular processes and life experiences that effect that charge. Using EMF emitting devices like cell phones, air pods, and computers are some of them. This is part of the science that the field of grounding stands upon.

Being ‘mischarged’ (also known as ungrounded) can lead to a host of ailments including anxiety, insomnia, mood swings, and chronic inflammation. This is especially the case for empaths and energy sensitive people who can feel minute shifts in their field. Deep exhaustion, lowered defenses, and absorbing others feelings can happen in the case when these people become ungrounded. 

Reclaiming Your Power: The Role of Spiritual Tools and Energy Hygiene

Understanding this layer of why it feels so heavy is only half the battle. As a highly sensitive empath who has also felt this way – I want you to know that there is hope. You do not have to continue feeling this way. While it does take some work – moving from surviving to thriving is in your wheelhouse.

While it can be hard to feel well in this changing world, it is not impossible. By implementing intentional spiritual toolsand practicing daily energy hygiene, you can keep your nervous system and your energy body strong, resilient, and functioning so that you feel energized, connected and LIKE YOURSELF.  Acts like grounding, auric field strengthening, energy body repair, and creating boundaries around when and how you use technology are life changing. 

Some people thrive by creating their own unique routine. They key is finding ways that work for you and being consistent in keeping them in your schedule.
