Basic Grounding Practice for Everyday Wellness
What if I told you that there was something that you can do that costs nothing (or very little) for only 20 minutes a day that could transform your life (even if you already have a great one)? That with consistent 20 minute regular exposures, this wonderful thing could help you (or your children) deal with everything from:
- managing day to day stress (and its impact on the body)
- processing sadness, rage, and grief
- improving sleep quality
- reducing inflammation
- nervous system regulation
to success pathways like
- focus (for tasks)
- clear creative connection
- ability to express yourself more clearly
- patience and emotional stability
to spiritual issues like:
- processing energy
- energy body repair
- feeling clear – self connection
- learning sacred lessons
Well. That is exactly what I am going to tell you.
So what is this magical thing (being) that most of us can access for little to no cost?
EARTH.
Nature immersion as a topic is experiencing a spiritual and academic convergence. Everyone seems to be agreeing right now – EARTH HEALS. From grounding to bird call to ion exposure, different layers of how Earths’ medicine works on humans (and our biophilic aka natural propensity to be healed by Earth) are coming to the forefront of conversations. Though science is sometimes hesitant to admit it, research now verifies what traditional healers like me (and all the ones that came before this moment) have been saying. Earth heals. YES. The elders were (are) right.
Feeling is believing.
There is such a huge difference between ‘knowing’ something and ‘experiencing’ it. This is very much the case with the laundry list of positive things that direct Earth connection can do for us. It all starts with getting out there and allowing ourselves to get grounded.
Try this Grounding Practice
This is a simple yet highly impactful grounding practice that you can do anytime, anyplace. So long as you have the ability to touch the ground, a tree, or a rock, you are ready to get started.
Do this any time that you feel like you would like to get grounded. I recommend at the beginning of a day or the end as a nice way to ‘charge up’ and ‘wind down’.

Go outside
Find a place you can sit comfortably for 20 minutes
Take off your shoes (and if you cannot do that, work with the palms of your hands)
Make skin to ground (tree, water) contact
Slow down your breath. Allow yourself to inhale for a count of 4, hold for 5, release for 6. (Lengthen as needed.)
Allow yourself to synch in with your environment: listen to the sounds, smell the smells, take note of animals or the clouds
Maintain that contact for 20 minutes
When done, say thank you to Earth.
How Do You Know it Works
When done – take a moment and check in with yourself. How do you feel? Are you more relaxed? Are you breathing smoother? Did your mood lift? You may not feel different immediately. One of the ways the Earth connection can show up for us is that it helps us rest better overnight and find more clarity in the morning. *The more you do this – the more you will notice shifts and benefits.*
In general, working with this practice a few times a week will expose you to the benefits of nature that I listed earlier on in this article. Have children? Get them outside with you and make it a family affair. *Yes, there may be some running and walking – go barefoot if safe or have a yard picnic for supper where you can put the toes in the grass while eating.*
Small Steps Create Big Results
I know that this seems like a silly humble activity that may not make much different. The truth is, grounding is one of the most important acts that a human can do to maintain their wellness, body, mind and soul. This is why it is a core focus at Crow Medicine and in my school IndiCrow Academy.
